Medical Billing and Coding
Certificate Program

The career of Medical Billing and Coding is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today!  Medical Billing and Coding Specialist are employed in hospitals, physicians’ offices, health care insurance agencies, nursing homes, and health clinics. 

Upon successful completion of Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Billing/Coding/Medisoft, Medical Coding I and Medical Coding II students will receive a Medical Billing and Coding Certificate.  This certificate prepares you for the National Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exam offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Medical Terminology

If you are interested in a career in health care, then this course is a must! This course serves as a prerequisite for many allied health careers. Build your medical vocabulary, understand terms associated with the function of the human body, and learn spelling of medical terms. Learn word elements of anatomy, physiology, pathology and other related areas in the field of medicine. Abbreviations, prefixes and word building exercises will be included. NEW! Nurse's Aide Training

This course will prepare you to take the State Certification Exam.  The Nurse's Aide course covers basic nursing skills, personal care skills, recognition of mental health and social service needs, basic restorative services, and resident rights.  You will assist in taking vital signs of patients and meet their hygiene, safety, nutrition, exercise, elimination, comfort and oxygen needs.  Employment opportunities include: hospitals, nursing homes, home health care agencies, domiciliary care, and residential care facilities. Uniforms, gait belts and certification fees are not included in tuition.  Mantoux test required prior to clinical rotation.  Must be able to lift, push, move and turn at least 50 lbs.  Final acceptance depends upon an acceptable CORI.  No refunds are given due to an unacceptable CORI.

Nurse's Aide Training

Home Health Aide
This course is designed as a 15-hour crossover for Certified Nurse’s Aides. Earn a certificate as a Home Health Aide and expand your employment opportunities.

Phlebotomy Technician

The primary responsibility of a phlebotomist is to obtain blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists must be familiar with all aspects of the blood collection process. Lectures include laboratory terminology, anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, specimen processing, communication skills, legal/ethical issues and professionalism. Students will have hands-on laboratory practice sessions as well as clinical training. The course consists of 90 hours of classroom training in addition to clinical training. For clinical training, students must be able to commit to one week full time beginning at the end of the course and must meet acceptable standards to advance to clinical training. Complement your training with EKG technician and/or Medical Assistant Essentials (Clinical) to make yourself more marketable. Payment plans available.

EKG Technician
The EKG Technician certificate course offers the skills necessary to perform EKG tracings of the heart. This 32-hour program is designed to be an introduction to the cardiovascular system and related terminology with an emphasis on performing 12-lead EKG tracings and basic rhythm identification. If you are training for a career in the health care industry, this skill will enhance your career opportunities in a physician’s office, clinic, skilled nursing or hospital setting. Patient Care Technician Certificate Program (PCT)
Patient Care Technicians work with doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to provide direct patient care in a variety of health care invironments especially hospitals and other acute care settings. Duties include:

  • Monitor/record vital signs, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration
  • Assist in medical exams
  • Perform CPR and First Aid
  • Perform basic lab work, phlebotomy
  • Assist patients with nutrition, mobility, and grooming
  • Observe, record and report patients' physical, mental and emotional conditions
  • Insert and irrigate urinary catheters
  • Perform dry sterile dresing changes

Upon successful completion of Medical Terminology, Basic Life Support, EKG and Phlebotomy Technician students will receive a Patient Care Technician Certificate. Prerequisite: Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Medical Secretary/Receptionist Medical Records

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers CPR/AED
All employees in healthcare settings will benefit from this course. The class covers infant, child and adult techniques for choking and CPR training. Students receive information on heart attacks, stroke, AED (defibrillator) training and use of barrier devices. EMT (Basic Emergency Medical Technician's Training)
The Institute for Emergency Medical Education (IEME) sponsored course consists of 139 classroom and skills training hours plus clinical time in a hospital emergency room and field internship requiring a minimum of 5 patient assessments and 10 hours of observation. This course is designed to teach you how to handle medical, traumatic and psychiatric emergencies ranging from simple cuts to heart attacks and strokes. During this program, students will be given the knowledge and skills needed to handle many types of emergencies. For the student wishing to obtain certification as an EMT, upon successful completion of this program, you will be eligible to take the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Emergency Medical Technicians’ Exam. State certificate fee $150, exam fee $130, uniform fee $25.
Prerequisites: 18 years of age, ability to read, write and understand English, GED or diploma, pass English and Math screening exam, proof of all required vaccinations, a current TB test. Register at least one week in advance of course start date.
Refund policy: Refund less $25 processing fee if withdrawn prior to start of class. Refund less $100 if after first class but prior to second class. No refund after second class.

Medical Billing/Coding/Medisoft

The career of Medical Billing and Coding is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today! Learn medical diagnostic and procedural coding utilizing ICD-9 and CPT codebooks. Familiarize yourself with health insurance requirements and gain the ability to complete insurance forms for medical billing. This class will be offered in part in a computer lab for direct hands-on experience. Medical Coding and Billing Specialists are employed in hospitals, physicians’ offices, health care insurance agencies, nursing homes, and health clinics. Other medical positions are claims examiner, billing clerk, reimbursement analyst and more. It is suggested that students also take courses in computers if needed. Upon completion, you will be ready for an entry-level position in a physician’s office, or in a medical billing/coding department at a clinic or hospital.Prerequisite: Medical Terminology and computer experience.

Medical Coding I
In-depth medical coding course especially designed with a hands-on approach to working with ICD-9 and CPT. Upon completion of this course students will have a solid working knowledge of coding in a physicians/outpatient office. Emphasis is placed on accurate coding selection, following approved guidelines, compliance, correct sequencing of multiple diagnosis, procedure codes and special concentration on modifiers. Instructor will provide hands-on coding scenarios and coding problems that may hinder payment in the doctors/outpatient office. The instructor will also provide practical materials currently used in a physician’s office to further enhance the student’s knowledge in the workplace. This class will serve as a building block to Medical Coding II where students may decide to continue onto a coding certification.

Medical Coding II

This advanced course is designed for the experienced coder or student who has completed a basic coding education program. Review CPT, ICD-9-CM (Volume 1 and 11), and HCPCS Level II coding skills. Obtain a thorough working knowledge of coding and prepare for the national Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exam offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). This class offers hands-on procedural and surgical coding.
Prerequisite: Must meet AAPC’s eligibility requirements to take the CPC exam.

Basic Anatomy and Physiology

This course is recommended for those entering the health field especially Medical Coding. It is designed to explore and understand the body’s structure and investigate the functions for living things. Topics include terminology of location position, the body as a whole, skeletal and articular systems, muscular system, nervous system, lymphatic system, immune system, respiratory system, digestive system, endocrine system and integumentary system. Students will be reintroduced to or learn for the fist time the basics of three introductory levels of anatomy: developmental anatomy, gross anatomy, and systemic anatomy. They will also learn the basics of four levels of physiology: cell physiology, systemic physiology, neurophysiology, and cardiovascular physiology. Hands-on lab investigations, multi-media learning tools, and “take-with-you” materials and resources are included in every class.
